NWADO and members launch new project.
Gender stereotypes tend to side lined women from decision making at various levels. When disasters strike, women are less likely to survive and more likely to be injured due to long standing gender inequalities that have created disparities in information, mobility, decision-making, and access to resources and training. In the aftermath, women and girls are less able to access relief and assistance, further threatening their livelihoods, wellbeing and recovery, and creating a vicious cycle of vulnerability to future disasters. Many international strategies and frameworks have identified women as one of the key stakeholders in any disaster management efforts due to many reasons. Women play a significant role in disaster response and recovery stages specifically at household level. However, their roles in organizational decision making, particularly in disaster risk governance, is limited due to uncovered reasons.
NWADO, CAEPA,BARUDWO and Bamenda II women with Disabilities are placing women at the frontlines of Disaster risk reduction. This project led by CAEPA has received support from the Common Wealth Foundation. The project was launched in Aug 2023 and will focus on strengthening women’s role in disaster risk governance in the city of Bamenda. During the project launch day CRTC Bamenda invited the project partners to engage the population to understand what the project is all about. Participation at the project launching workshop were the mayors of Bamenda I,II,III councils, Regional Council, Regional Delegation of Environment, Regional Delegation of Housing and Urban Planning, quarter heads and representatives of women groups from disaster risk pruned communities.
